Fredericksburg has always had my heart because of its charm and historical locations. There are so many hidden gems in and around town that are free or require a small permit fee to take photographs. I thought this would be a helpful post for 2026-2027 brides who are beginning the planning process and need some inspiration or locations close to home!
Chatham Manor Fredericksburg Virginia
We will start with the beautiful Chatham Manor nestled just outside the heart of downtown Fredericksburg. This stunning 250-year-old manor rests above the banks of the Rappahannock River and served as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862. Aside from its sad history, the manor itself is a stunning brick manor surrounded by 1,300 acres of property. It is absolutely free of charge to tour and capture professional photography. The gardens are well maintained and have a variety of colorful plants and flowers that bloom throughout the year. Chatham Manor's gates are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm but do close automatically. You can read more about the manor and its history at the link below.

Gari Melchers Home & Studio Falmouth, Virginia
Gari Melchers Home & Studio is private property that serves as an art museum for the over 1,500 works of Gari Melchers and other artists. The grounds are gated and include the main house and gardens as well as several buildings hosting Gari's artwork. This is a stunning property for photography of any kind. The grounds are well-kept, and you are greeted with a cute welcome center and gift shop at the entrance of the property. Unlike Chatham Manor, this property is privately owned and does require a $50 permit to photograph on the grounds. Reservations are required for professional photography services, so make sure you plan your session in advance! You can find more information on photography permits and regulations at the link below.

Falmouth Beach, Downtown Fredericksburg
The Historic Port of Falmouth, known as Falmouth Beach, is located along the Rappahannock River and is a very popular location for locals to enjoy the river and all the amenities like fishing, picnicking, and swimming. It is free of charge to enter on regular days, and on some holidays, there is a small parking fee, or they are completely closed. This is a beautiful location for sunset portraits once the locals have gone home for the evening and offers views of the bridge off Route 1 leading into downtown. When the water is low, there are plenty of large rocks and vegetation you can use for posing. Aside from the river, the park has several walking paths attached to the park that are also free to walk, including Belmont Ferry Farm Trail located off Butler Road in Falmouth. You can find a map and more information at the link below.
